Twin Groves Campground

Location: Pine Grove, PA

Date of Stay: January 15, 2013 – January 18, 2013

Our Site: V08

This campground is one that we definitely want to go to again! Our stay there was for three days on our way south, and the weather was cold and dreary while we were there.

The campground itself was very easy to get to, being only a few miles off I-81.

The sites are open, level, and most are pull throughs. The sites and roads are blue stone, and nicely angled for easy access.

There seems to be a really nice pool and office area. There is also a restaurant on the premises, but it’s closed during the winter season.

The campground is open year round; the office hours are limited in the off season though, only open between 3 and 5 pm. There is a night check-in area where they leave information about open sites and how to get in the gated entrance.

Twin Groves Campground is 25 miles from Hershey, PA. and this campground looks like it would be a good base to see the sights. I expect that we will be returning another time when the weather is more pleasant.

Brook ‘n’ Wood Campground

Location: Elizaville, NY

Date of Stay: July 18 – 23, 2012

Our July stay was at Brook n Wood Campground in the Hudson Valley area. This campground had a good number of big rig sites. No pull-through sites though.

We were in an area that backed up to the woods, but there were a number of open sites in the field across from us.

Our reason for going to this park was to spend time with our niece and nephews, and their favorite part by far was the pool. We went to the pool every day. When we first arrived, it was pretty crowded with families, but the majority left after the weekend, and we had the pool to ourselves for the most part for the rest of our time there.

IMG_2594Other than the pool, there was a small playground and miniature golf. We didn’t really check it out, because the weather wasn’t the greatest while we were there, but from the sign it looked like they charged a few bucks to play the miniature golf, and I don’t think we would have spent any money on it.

The campground does have a pretty extensive schedule of events for the summer on their website. But I’m not sure how they really go off. The weekend that we were there was supposed to be Christmas in July, with cookie decorating etc scheduled for Sat., Sunday and then repeated on Monday and Tuesday, but they didn’t have any of the events on the weekdays – I assume because the campground was not full of families at that point.

If you like relaxing in the middle of nowhere, enjoying the serenity of nature, then you will probably like this campground. But if you’re looking for a lot of places to visit, shopping, restaurants, I don’t think you will find what you are looking for here.

Lake George RV Park

Location: Lake George, NY

Our Site: 16

Date of Stay: June 12 – 17, 2012

Our Lake George trip was also early in the season. We headed to this park for our first Owners rally. We had a back-in site for our stay. There are tons of trees in this park, and the roads in the campground are all paved. One downside - this park is very hilly – we like to ride our bikes and we didn’t even really try here because no matter which direction you go, it’s up!

It is a beautiful area though. The campground has some really lovely parks and walkways. There are scenic views everywhere you look.

We went to the village of Lake George while we were there, and ate at a restaurant by the water.

Like the campground in Cooperstown, we would probably only do this one in the off-season….both because of the crowds in Lake George, and because of their normal prices. Even the off-season prices aren’t cheap. But if you are going to stay in Lake George, this campground would be a nice option for a few days.

Hartwick Highlands Campground

Location: Hartwick, NY (near Cooperstown)

Our Site: C11

Date of Stay: May 19 – 23, 2012

Our trip to Hartwick Highland Campground was our first of the 2012 camping season. The campground had just opened on the 15th, so we arrived on their first weekend. We pretty much had the campground to ourselves, and the temperatures were mainly in the 60s during our stay.

IMG_2001

The area that we stayed in was nice and open – all pull through sites, nice wide roads.

IMG_2006

There was also a very large area that had cabins. Being so close to Cooperstown, they have a lot of groups that stay here – baseball teams etc.

The trip there was great – almost all highway; the directions were easy to follow. We had checked our route on Google Earth before we went, and we found that extremely helpful. The only part of the trip which was a little challenging was the fact that the last road to the campground, Seminary Road, was all uphill. But Max handled it with no issues!

We loved our site. A nice big pull-through site in an open field. Harry and I have had enough encounters trying to get around trees on our way in and out of sites, that we prefer open sites without trees. We have also heard too many stories from other rv’ers of problems with tree branches etc.

IMG_2066Harry and I are not baseball fans, but of course that is one of the biggest draws to this campground – it’s proximity to Cooperstown.

We were there during the off-season, and I was very glad. This town is very small, and I wouldn’t want to have to negotiate these roads during the  tourist season.

If you do go to Hartwick Highlands Campground, make sure to check out Brooks BBQ, a local favorite!

We will definitely be back, but it will continue to be in the off-season. We like not having to fight the crowds.

Welcome!

This blog is still under construction…but I plan to use it to create a record of the campgrounds where we stay on our travels.

Stay tuned! Smile
